Hydrangeas are divided up into different categories.
The type determines pruning times to produce the
best bloom.
arborescens types (Smooth Hydrangea) – bloom
on new wood so they should be pruned hard in late
winter or early spring especially to maintain shape
of plant.
macrophylla types (Mophead Hydrangea) –
bloom on old wood so minimal pruning is required;
deadhead as needed. The pH of the soil may
determine bloom colour with some Mophead types
(acidic soils produce more blue blooms whereas
alkaline soils will bring out more pink colour)
paniculata types (Panicled Hydrangea)– bloom on
new wood; prune in late winter/early spring. Many
varieties can be easily pruned into a Standard, tree
form.
quercifolia types (Oakleaf Hydrangea) – bloom
on old wood so pruning is minimal; deadhead as
required.
All Hydrangeas like to grow in an area where
moisture is always available.
